it is ok to give your greyhound tinned dog food?
i feed my greyhound on supagreyhound complete mixed with half a tin of chappie morning and evening as recommended to me by other greyhound owners. but he has really soft stools so wonder if i should change the brand to butchers tripe (also recommended) or chuck it all and cook chicken, rice pasta etc instead.
The best thing to feed a greyhound is a high quality dry dog food. It is nutritionally balanced and better for their teeth. You can give them the wet /canned food as a treat or supplement. But greys can be prone to dental issues so the dry food is better. Look for a good one in which the first ingredient is an animal-based protein source (not animal by-products), such as chicken, lamb, fish or egg. These ingredients contain a full complement of essential amino acids unlike a vegetable-based protein sources, such as soybean meal or corn gluten meal, which are also harder to digest.
You can make your own dog food at home but human food is not nutritionally balanced for dogs so you need to do research to make sure you are giving the dog enough protein, carbohydrates, fats, and nutrients, and supplementation is essential for health. Feeding your dog an unbalanced diet.. like a meat only tripe diet, will result in nutritional deficiencies and likely health problems.
Also they can get upset tummies when you change their food, so make changes gradually so they can get used to it. A couple tablespoons of yogurt can work wonders. it contains beneficial cultures that are good for the intestines and can alleviate stomach issues. That always does the trick for my greys.
